Clinical Somatics

The Somatic Systems Institute was founded in 1993 in Amherst, Massachusetts to bring awareness of Dr. Thomas Hanna's work to fellow health care professionals and clients all over the northeast. After SSI had established satellite practices in Manhattan (1995) and Providence, Rhode Island (1999), Dr. Hanna's widow – Eleanor Criswell, Ed.D. of the Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training – conferred the honor of making the Somatic Systems Institute the first and only practitioner training program outside of California.

SSI continues its 14 year tradition of helping to improve the quality of both health care and education by offering summer development sessions of the highest caliber and integrity. Taught by licensed instructors of the Novato Institute, our training program also includes free support services and consultations throughout the year to ensure understanding and mastery of this exciting field.

The Somatic Systems Institute is a national resource and educational center for the general realms of somatic education, healthcare, science, and philosophy, and for many of the specific fields and modalities somatic in nature or orientation. We are home to the only fully trained, certified Clinical Somatic Education™ practitioners in New England.
