History of Somatic Systems Institute

The Somatic Systems Institute was founded in 1993 in Amherst, Massachusetts to bring awareness of Dr. Thomas Hanna's work to fellow health care professionals and clients all over the northeast. After SSI had established satellite practices in Manhattan (1995) and Providence, Rhode Island (1999), Dr. Hanna's widow – Eleanor Criswell, Ed.D. of the Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training – conferred the honor of making the Somatic Systems Institute the first and only practitioner training program outside of California. The Somatic Systems Institute is a national resource and educational center for the general realms of somatic education, healthcare, science, and philosophy, and for many of the specific fields and modalities somatic in nature or orientation.
